We're so excited to introduce you to Kirsta Schilter, one of the most unique, inspiring and fun-loving women we've had the pleasure of working with.

Krista approaches her teachings with reverence and delight and endeavours to keep it light and full of support for our indivisible uniqueness. Her interests include urban agriculture and horticultural therapy which lend to a reclaiming of a lost connection with nature.

She believes that a mindfulness practice and a connection with self through the natural world will provide us with the means to reset and recharge ourselves.

Krista will be hosting an 11-part Kundalini workshop at MISFITSTUDIO Queen, which you can learn more about and sign up for here

Tell us your love story with MISFIT

I was lured by the smell and everything that came thereafter is an ecstatic blur.

Tell us about Kundalini!

I have the deepest reverence for this practice. It’s potent, it’s effective, it’s bliss. Kundalini yoga is a dynamic and powerful blend of spiritual and physical practices designed to give you an experience of your soul. It precisely and consciously combines breath, mudra, eye-focus, mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, purify the blood, and move your chakras. It is deeply meditative and helps awaken the neutral mind which allows one to engage with the world within and around in a much more conscious way.

I teach and practice Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan who is like the grand-daddy of this practice – the person responsible for bringing it to the west. There was a time when these ancient teachings were reserved only for royalty and now we have access to them through manuals, foundations and teaching libraries, teacher trainings, solstice gatherings, and MISFITSTUDIO Queen.

What can we expect at the upcoming Kundalini workshop?

Oooo we’re gonna do some weird shit!! Especially on your path it’s important to be discerning but sometimes it’s just as important to dive right in to the deep end and TRUST the teachings: we’ll breathe a lot, we’ll sweat, probably cry, definitely giggle, maybe curse, kick our own asses, stick our tongues out, chant till we vibrate, squat 'til we burn, and float in deep relaxation. I saved the worst for last: math. Expect math. But just once while we crunch our numbers, We’ll use tantric numerology to explore our unique destinies, gifts, karma, and paths, using our birth dates, in relation to the 10 bodies (1 physical body, 3 mental bodies, 6 energetic bodies).

What is it about teaching that lights you up?

Eternal gratitude for the opportunity to elevate another person and bear witness to its ripple effect on everyone in community. We get to co-create and hold space for the profound shifts that come as we independently + collectively develop love and respect for ourselves. I deeply trust that as we do this we help to change the global system at its very core.

If your best friend were to describe you in three words, what would those words be?

I did an exercise with some soul sisters where we had to write 5 unique gifts we could share with the world on one another’s backs. My first 3 read: radiance, openness, wisdom.

What do you do to stay grounded?

I’m in love with a taurus and I touch dirt. In an effort to ground I discovered the urban agriculture scene in the city and have since become a horticultural therapist working in various capacities at green spaces around the city: rooftops, community gardens, urban farms, greenhouses, farmers markets.

What does self-care mean to you?

Honouring that the most intimate relationship I will ever know is between me and me.

Where can we find you on a Sunday afternoon in the city?

Leading a yang-yin yoga practice at Pure Yoga Toronto and preparing for a feast and some of that good grape juice when the sun sets.

If you could go back in time and live in any era, what would it be and why?

Early 1960s California with activists + eccentrics because there were no iPhones and nudity, social justice, civil rights, human dignity, and freedom seemed paramount. It was about exploration, finding new ways of expression, being aware of one's existence. Interestingly enough some of the first Kundalini teachings in the west were shared with this community and the OG practitioners were those at Woodstock learning to get high on their own supply.

Favourite practice to teach?

A Kundalini infused class called ~the gift of womanhood~ based on the journey into our mysterious design as a sacred women. It’s about inner mastery, self-discovery, and waking up to our essence. We explore topics like woman's nature and design, changing structural violence, healing archetypal mother wounds, woman's creative identity, shakti power, manifesting with the elements, living prayer, magic, and miracles. Together we are transitioning from fear + anger towards peace + love through examination of both oppression and liberation in a room full of WARRIOR women.

You focus a lot on breathwork – can you tell us a bit more about the power of breath?

Mmm I love breath. Pranayam has SHIFTED my life. If the mind follows the breath and the body follows the mind then perhaps we should pay attention. Our rate of breathing and our state of mind are inseparable. Learning to breathe easy is an effective tool for increasing health, vitality, and connectedness in one's life. We can use the breath to affect and manage different states of consciousness and relaxation while strengthening the nervous system. So simple yet so profound: we can access prana – the energy of the universe – and increase its flow through conscious attention to inhalation, exhalation, and retention. MAGIC. The first and last things we do in this physical lifetime are to take a breath. Why not make them count?

Song you have on repeat?

Come on Home ~ The Lijadu Sisters it’s soooooo bueno!!!!

Who is a Woman Warrior that inspires you?

My mama, my mama’s, her mama the mama after that forever and ever. I’ve been feeling real connected to my ancestors lately as I climb inside and heal mama wounds for all of us. These woman stood in their power and I know it.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I want to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time bc I’m hungry for life!!!

Favourite words to live by?

How do you like to start and end your day? Any go-to rituals?

My go-to non-negotiable ritual is a lil bit of centering, tuning in, pranayam, movement + meditation. Maybe it’s 3 minutes, maybe it’s 3 hours; sometimes once a day, sometimes 3x. What’s important is that I show up for myself every freaking day. I’m trying to get better at flossing every night before bed.

Favourite podcast?

I’m not a huuuge podcaster but when I’m feeling it I like Reality Riffing or Underwire. Awake in the World w the late Michael Stone is such a goodie. RIP.

What does being a MISFIT mean to you?
