Tell us your love story with MISFIT
I grew up dancing and moving a LOT and then I moved to Toronto to study dance in university. A few years after I graduated, I had somehow completely stopped dancing and taking movement classes. Layers of insecurities, negative self talk and pressures had piled up to the point that I allowed what had been my passion and my way of connecting to myself and to others to just slowly dwindle out of my life. This is where MISFITSTUDIO comes in! One of my close friends Robyn, who is also one of the amazing teachers at the studio, worked hard at convincing me to take a class. Once I worked up the courage to walk into a class, I knew my life was completely changed. I could feel right away that the MISFITMETHOD was about so much more than movement and physical strength and that felt SO right to me. It was in line with what I’d always known but had never managed to express. I remember having tears in my eyes throughout that first class as I felt the layers lighten up. I knew I had started on a journey of healing, reconnection and remembering – or as Amber says it, the journey of coming HOME to myself!
What is it about teaching that lights you up?
Oh man. It’s the coolest thing to hold space for people to tune into themselves, to connect mind/body/soul.. to feeeeeeeel! Ultimately, offering a space where people can move through all the extra layers, and get to know themselves a little better.
If your best friend were to describe you in three words, what would those words be?
I asked my crew, these are the ones that came up more than once: Nurturing, loyal, curious.
Standout memory from your time at MISFIT?
First day of the Teacher Training is a big one. Sitting in circle with our group for the first time, listening to everyone’s story and sharing my own...the room was so ripe with possibility and I knew I was in the right place.
What do you do to stay grounded?
I blast music and dance around in my room, I care for my plants, I go camping...Mother Nature has a way of really putting things into perspective for me. When you make space for it, you begin to see the greatness and beauty in the things that seem so simple – the rain, the moon, the trees....
Where can we find you on a Sunday afternoon in the city?
Teaching, adventuring through the trails in High Park with my husband, drinking tea at home and working on whatever knitting, macrame or embroidery projects I have on the go.
If you could go back in time and live in any era, what would it be and why?
I’m pretty comfortable here and now (yes, I’m a Taurus). But if I have to go back, I’d like to go way way wayyyyyy back. Who wants to live in a cave with me?
Favourite class to teach?
Queen Street or Ossington?
Queen is where some really big life shifts occurred for me, and OSS feels like home because it’s where we did all of the MISFITMETHOD Teacher Training. Can I pass?
Song you have on repeat?
Cat Power – Woman
Who is a Woman Warrior that inspires you?
My grandma! She’s 91 years old and still so eager to learn, laugh, create and DANCE!
Favourite words to live by?
"The best way out is always through."
How do you like to start and end your day? Any go-to rituals?
I usually start my day by taking a moment to myself. I rock in my grandma’s old lazboy rocking chair, I sip on a green tea with a stick of Palo Santo burning nearby and I use that time to reflect and set intentions for the day. The way I end my day is less consistent lately but often involves reading, journaling, or both.
I don’t have a fave yet – probably because I’m almost always listening to music. Send me your podcast recommendations!
What does being a MISFIT mean to you?
Authenticity, strength, community, connection, vulnerability.
